JOSEPH SMITH, JR. and OLIVER COWDRY received the Melchizedek Priesthood in 1829 under the hands of Peter, James and John. They being visited by Peter James and John who were sent as resurrected beings to restore this Priesthood to the earth. |

The Three Witnesses were called by revelation to choose the Twelve Apostles and on 14 February 1835, were "blessed by the laying on of the hands of the Presidency," Joseph Smith, Jr., Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams, to ordain the Twelve Apostles. (Church History, Vol. 2, pp. 187-188) |

Footnotes: Originally the priesthood was called the Holy
Priesthood after the order of the Son of God. But out
of reverence for His holy name, and to prevent too
frequent use of the Sacred Name of the Son of God (
Jesus Christ). The name of the priesthood was changed
to the Melchizedek Priesthood after the great High Priest
Melchizedek who held this same priesthood.

not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of
Melchizedek.

church, in ancient days, called that priesthood after
Melchizedek, or the Melchizedek Priesthood.
